2nd Sunday of Advent

SECTION ONE: NOTES ON THE READINGS

We are almost there but we did not arrive there yet. 

• Advent is like a boundary, a portal, a liminal space, the middle ground between the old and the new. A space like a bridge, which links two points, two destinations. 
• When in a liminal space, we are not here neither there but in expectation for our arrival
• Like in a journey, we are on our way, not there yet. 

The readings for Advent II are ‘documented reports’ by Isaiah and Mark about the people of God living this liminal experience. Many were in exile, others already established with family and successful business but it was time to return home and they were not sure how to start back home from zero. So, Isaiah brings a promise that God will make the path straight and the desert will be like an avenue, easy to travel back home. The Psalmist says that righteousness will open a path so the people of God will return to God in Faith, Peace and Justice.    

Mark opens his gospel, not with the Christmas narratives but with the liminal space of the desert; both weird and uncomfortable message of baptism and redemption. A message that challenged old ways, old structures, but that offered new opportunities. The time has come in which all things are going to change and for the better. A great transformation is about to take place: physically, geographically, socially, economically, anthropologically and spiritually but people have to get ready and the baptism is the way to enter this new reality. Baptism is the only way! Burying in the old self and rising to a new self, to a new creation. This is the message of Mark, Isaiah, of the Church, of the Advent and the message of Christ: Be ready to enter into a new way of life.  

SECTION TWO: SERMON 

If there is a message that makes us uncomfortable and resistant its the message of baptism, which holds a mirror unto our face and shows where we need to change. This voice in wilderness tells us that we need to change in a hurry for the sake of ourselves, for the sake of the planet, for the sake of our present and future.

This voice of the liminal wilderness is both good news and hard news to hear. It is hard because it tells us that as in the time of Exile, as today, people carried within a kind of destructive, anti-life, anti-God seed that puts in jeopardy every dream that God dreamed with us, since from the time of planting the first Garden. 

We have damaged our planet, we have developed fancy ways of warfare, a kind of economy which promotes competitiveness and destruction not solidarity.

We have prepared our children to enter a system where people see other as rivals, not companions. This has to change. The message of John the Baptist is unsettling but necessary. Something has to change from the inside out; we need to become new creation, new creatures, just as Christ is. Christ empties of his privileges, goes under water to be baptised and unveils to us who we really are; our true nature, our true selves and our destiny: we are beloved children of God. 

We are actually, seeds of heaven, we destined to change and start a new earth, a new Eden, a new nation, a new priesthood, by changing the structures of injustice within and around ourselves. By taking upon us Christ’s baptismal mantle of justice and peace, his own vesture and nature. Remembering our Christian baptism is the good way to start the New Year.

SEÇÃO UM: NOTAS SOBRE AS LEITURAS

Estamos quase lá mas ainda lá não chegamos. 

• Advento e’ como uma fronteira, um portal, espaço liminar, o solo entre o velho e novo. Um espaço como uma ponte, que liga dois polos, dois destinos.
• Quando estamos em um espaço liminar, não estamos nem ca nem estamos la mas na expectativa da chegada.
• Como em uma jornada, estamos a caminho, mas não ainda na chegada. 

As leituras para o Advento II são ‘documentários’ feitos por Isaías e Marcos sore o povo de Deus vivenciando esta experiencia liminar. Muitos estavam em Exilio, outros já estabilizados com família e negócios bem-sucedidos, mas era tempo de retornar para casa e tinham de começar tudo de novo do zero quando voltassem para casa. Então Isaías proclama a promessa que Deus vai abrir uma vereda reta no meio do deserto, como uma avenida, facilitando a viagem de volta. 

O Salmo fala de que Retidão ira a frente abrindo vereda para que o povo de Deus retorne para casa e volte-se para Deus em Fé, Paz e Justiça. Marcos inicia seu Evangelho, não com as narrativas de Natal mas como o espaço liminar do deserto; ambos são a estranha e incómoda mensagem do Batismo e Redenção. A mensagem que desafiou os modelos antigos, velhas estruturas, mas oferece novas oportunidades. 

O tempo e’ chegado no qual todas as coisas sofrerão mudanças e para melhor. A grande transformação está para acontecer: física, geográfica, social, económica, antropologicamente e espiritualmente mas as pessoas devem estar preparadas e o Batismo e’ meio para adentrar esta nova realidade. O Batismo e’ a única vereda! Enterrando a velha natureza e ressuscitando para o novo ser, para uma nova vida.  

SEÇÃO DOIS: SERMÃO

Se há uma mensagem que nos causa desconforto e resistência e’ a mensagem do batismo, que e’ como segurando o espelho diante de nos e nos mostra onde precisamos de mudança. Essa voz que clama no deserto, nos diz que precisamos mudar e com urgência, por causa de nós mesmos, por causa do planeta, por causa do nosso presente e do nosso futuro. Esta voz vinda do deserto liminar e ao mesmo tempo boas Novas como também Noticia difícil de ouvir.  

E’ dura de ouvir pois nos diz que tanto em tempos de Exilio como nos dias de hoje, as pessoas carregam dentro de si um tipo de semente destrutiva, anti Deus, anti- vida que prejudica cada sonho que Deus sonhou conosco desde o tempo em o Éden foi plantado. Nos temos danificado o planeta, temos desenvolvido sofisticadas formas de fazer guerra, desenvolvido um tipo de economia que promove competição e não solidariedade mas destruição. Temos preparado nossos filhos para adentrar um sistema onde as pessoas vêem-se como rivais; não como companheiras. 

Isto tem que mudar. A mensagem de João Batista e’ incómoda, mas necessária. Alguma coisa em nós precisa mudar de dentro para fora; precisamos nos tornar em uma nova criação, em novas criaturas, assim como e’ Cristo. Cristo esvazia-se dos seus privilégios, submerge debaixo das aguas para ser batizado e revela-nos quem realmente somos, nossa verdadeira natureza, nosso verdadeiro ser, e nosso verdadeiro destino: nos somos filhos amados de Deus.

Na verdade como sementes do céu, somos destinados a mudar e começar uma nova terra, um novo Éden, uma nova nação, um novo sacerdócio mudando as estruturas de injustiça no nosso interior e ao nosso redor. Pelo revestir dos mantos batismais de Cristo, suas próprias vestimentas de Justiça e Paz e sua própria natureza. Relembrando nosso batismo em Cristo, e’ um bom caminho para começar o Ano Novo.
